Colorado Springs: Representing the Best of America

At the center of Colorado, settled in between plains,
pine forests, and the Rocky Mountains, lies Colorado
Springs. The city is largely defined by its many notable
landmarks including three that are beloved my many
Americans.

Fourteen miles north of downtown Colorado Springs lies the
United States Air Force Academy. Cadets, who are admitted
based on a combination of their high school achievements
and the recommendations of their Senators or Congressmen,
spend four years preparing themselves intellectually,
physically, and morally to be Air Force officers. Visitors
are welcome on campus year-round. The chapel, with its
stunning design, is the centerpiece of the attractions
that the academy has to offer.

Colorado Springs also hosts the United States Olympic
Training Center. One of its chief attactions is its
velodrome, which was built for the United States Cycling
Team to train at high altitude. Visitors to the center
have the opportunity to watch cyclists in training, or
even rent a bike and ride the track themselves if it isn't
in use. The Center also includes the U.S. Olympic Hall of
Fame Rotunda, the Olympic Spirit Store, places to eat,
and art exhibits. Two highly recognizable sights are the
twelve-foot tall Olympic Ring Wall and the Olympic Flame
housed on the rooftop terrace.

Colorado Springs is also home to 14,110-foot Pikes Peak.
In 1895, Katherine Lee Bates stood the summit, looked out
over the countryside below, and was inspired to write what
is arguably the most revered of patriotic songs, "America
the Beautiful." Today's visitors can access the summit
with far less effort than Ms. Bates by simply driving
there via the Pikes Peak Highway. If you visit, you'll
see the beauty that inspired the composition of a song
loved by a nation for over a hundred years.
