Satellite Connections
by Simon Greebs

A couple of generations ago, long distance communication
was limited to interpersonal letter exchanges and the
occasional telephone call that might take hours to connect
overseas. Nowadays, though, that's all changed. In addition
to cell phones, radio, and telecommunications, we enjoy
the benefits of satellite communications that help to
transmit a bevy of information to many distant locations
for all kinds of varied uses.

Satellites can receive and redirect information broadcasts
from radios and other transmitters. This information can be
pinpointed to focal reception points for further
dissemination or can be picked up by individual users on
certain kinds of devices. Satellites tell us many things
about the world we live in, such as weather changes,
climate shifts, and even geophysical changes. Military
monitoring and other data can be gleaned from the use of
satellites that float high above the earth.

Instruments that receive satellite broadcasts have
proliferated recently. Radios, televisions, and computers
are obvious examples. GPS, or global positioning systems,
aid vacationers in pinpointing their location as well as
help them coordinate the logistics of any planned trip.
Satellites have already changed our world and those who
live in it. The manner in which we view television with
regards to both content and timing, has been changed by
satellites. Baby boomers grew up in an era with only three
choices on the television while current generations have
hundreds of options from which to choose. The most recent
programming can now be viewed by persons living in remote
locations who previously had no such option.

Governments spend billions of dollars on placing,
maintaining, and upgrading satellite systems in space.
These expensive programs often become the focus of
contention in political debates or government spending
proposals. The average consumer may not know much about
satellites or care to learn, but the fact is that most of
us will experience changes in the way we live and do
business because of the use of satellite technology.

For those interesting in familiarizing themselves with
these fascinating devices, try surfing the web by entering
in keywords such as "satellite" or "communications". It
might even be a good idea to get in touch with local
politicians to guage their opinions on satellites and the
level of support they are willing to lend to the
technology. Educate yourself as much as possible so that
you may better influence how the development and
application of satellite technology.
